Here are samples for a few of my songs.
Rain
This simple piece is about the feeling you get when you’re cosily inside while the weather is doing its thing outside.
Resonance
When playing on an acoustic piano, many more sounds are produced than the actual notes you’re playing. Especially on the old piano I compose on at home, a lot of parts are vibrating along. In this piece I’ve tried to include enough ringing notes to find the resonant frequencies of the particular piano it’s played on, allowing them to sing in their own individual voice.
Clouds
While made up from countless tiny droplets and particles but mostly air, clouds seem like solid objects or structures from a distance. I tried to capture this property by interrupting the melody with a repeating note. This interwoven note becomes a drone throughout, not actually disrupting the melody.
Getting to know you
Whenever I get to work with a new cell type for science projects, I have to learn how they behave and what makes them happy. It may sound a bit geeky, but I always really enjoy this experience and can happily stare at cells under a microscope for hours. This song is about that process of getting to know a new cell.
Background radiation
All the time there are particles travelling past and through us, rarely interacting, coming from minerals in the earth and from the cosmos. Normally there is no way for us to notice them, but there are ways to visualise them. One such way is the bubble chamber, which makes the particles interact and bend, even spiral. This piece is based on those spiralling particles.
Meanderen
Dutch for “meandering,” this song is about the course of a river. Sometimes it’s slow and pools or gently meanders through the landscape, other times its pace increases, even forming rapids. I dedicated it to my late aunt Jeanne, who liked to visualise life like a river.
Below is the first performance of one of my pieces by professional musicians as well as the first composition for multiple instruments. It is performed by the B# Chamber Trio consisting of piano, flute and bassoon.
We’re in phase
This piece centres around two parts played by the piano that are slightly different in length and therefore shift out of phase. When first the flute and then the bassoon join in, they struggle. Until finally everything comes together again.
